On Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit, as the Pacific coastal area north of Puerto Vallarta is known, the ultrasecluded boutique resort Imanta (above) opens February 25th. Set on 250 jungly acres above the ocean, this cliff-clutching property currently comprises five striking free-standing one-bedroom stone casas and two larger casonas. All have private pools, multiple terraces, extraordinary views of jungle and sea. Designed by the green-leaning Texas architectural firm Overland Partners, Imanta bears a strong resemblance to an Amanresort such as Thailand’s Amanpuri. But according to Overland architect Bob Shemwell, he and his colleagues didn’t copy any existing or historical architectural style. Instead they let the site and the landscape inspire their design. “We looked at the material we had and how we could use it,” he says. “The stone for the walls of the buildings, for example, came from the boulders we cleared. We even hollowed bathtubs out of boulders and made slab stone tables from the leftover cuttings.
